A landmark or a tombstone?

By the time demolition work begins on North Platte's 1930s high school building late this summer, some people would like to have the school's main archway and central tower removed.

Those parts of the building could be rebuilt into a freestanding landmark to be placed elsewhere on school grounds, said North Platte architect Grant Creager.

Creager submitted various plans for such a landmark to the North Platte Public Schools board. The proposal would cost just over $300,000, of which nearly $70,000 would have to be paid up front.

Some who are working to save the old building, a unique example of Gothic Revival architecture, say that to save part of it for such a landmark would be a travesty. One of them called it a "tombstone." What do you think?

I think it would be great to preserve part of the old high school building. 157 32%
I don't like the idea. It would be like having a grave marker. 122 24%
Just stop arguing and let's move on. 219 44%
