Megan’s Law, signed into effect on May 17, 1996 by President Bill Clinton requires sex offenders to register with law enforcement. The law also requires that the community be notified when a high-risk offender moves into a neighborhood. Proponents believe that by informing the public about the presence of a sex offender in their community, neighbors will be able to take action to protect themselves from offenders by keeping themselves, and their children, out of harm’s way. Opponents of such measures argue that the offenders have done their time, paid their debt to society, and have the right to be left alone. On October 1st, The North Platte Bulletin published an article concerning the presence of ten high-risk offenders living in our community. The article included their names, addresses and pictures.
