Verlon  A.  Hopkins
     Verlon A. Hopkins, 90, of North Platte passed away Feb. 28, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center. He was born Apr. 22, 1922 in Stapleton to Benjamin and Gertrude Fifield Hopkins.
     Verlon graduated from Baker Rural High School in Stapleton. In 1943, he married Elsie Andre.
     He farmed and ranched for many years around Stapleton and worked for the Wells family for years before moving to North Platte to work at a gas station.
     Verlon helped build I-80 interstate for Missouri Valley Construction Company, mixing the concrete from North Platte to Big Springs. He joined the Nebraska Department of Roads in 1970, retiring in 1990. At that time, he and Elsie wintered in Yuma, Ariz.
     He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church and, for 17 years, he and Elsie officiated Sunday morning services at the North Platte Care Center.
     He enjoyed playing pool, going to lunch at the North Platte Senior Center, and calling bingo there.
     Survivors include a daughter, Patricia (Buster) Fear of North Platte; sister, Edna Sherwood of North Carolina; brother, LeRoy Hopkins of Oregon; granddaughters, Brenda (Keith) Larabee of Stuart, Sheila (Ed) Albright of Pierre, S.Dak. and Becky (Jeff) Barner of North Platte; six great-grandchildren; and brothers-in-law, Melvin Andre of Callaway, Cliff (Claire) Andre of Colorado and John (Peggy) Andre of California.
     He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; an infant brother; brother, Eugene Hopkins; sister-in-law, Helen Hopkins; and brother-in-law, Bill Sherwood.
     Memorials may be made to the First Assembly of God Church.
     Services were at 1:30 p.m. Mar. 2 at First Assembly of God with Rev. Gary Goodwin and Rev. Harun Gatobu officiating. Burial followed at Floral Lawns Memorial Gardens. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
