Smith Marvin Smith, 76, died Dec. 28, in North Platte. He was born July 31, 1936 in Franklin, to Milo and Viola Smith. At 16, Marvin went to work as a ranch hand for Chas Long at the Long Ranch northwest of North Platte. He worked for three generations of the Long family. One of his most unique jobs as a ranch hand was help prepare for Pres. Ronald Reagan visit to the Long Ranch in 1987. Marvin was a kind and gentle man who loved the ranch, the livestock and the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Survivors include Margaret Long, Michaelene Long and Cathy Long all of North Platte; Tom Long of Gothenburg and Patrick Long of Elko, Nev. Memorials may be made to PAWS-itive Partners. Cremation was chosen and a private memorial service will be at a later date at the Long Ranch. Adams & Swanson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
