Billy  J.  Brown
Billy J. Brown, age 78 of North Platte, was called home to be with Jesus June 21 after a brief battle with cancer.
Billy was born April 18, 1934, in a boxcar, located just a few houses from where he lived most of his life. His parents were Cleon Archibald and Marie DeWolf Brown.
Billy attended Cody Elementary school and was a 1952 graduate of North Platte High School. On October 28, 1953 he married Loewayne Thompson of North Platte in Ogallala. During his senior year of high school, Billy began working the 4 p.m. to midnight shift for Union Pacific Railroad. His 42 years with the railroad took them to Laramie and Rock Springs in Wyoming, Marysville, Kansas, and finally back to North Platte.
Mr. Brown took great pride in his family. The couple had four sons, Douglas of North Platte; Donald (Julie) of Maxwell, Dwayne (Deb) of Kearney, and Darwin of North Platte.
Also surviving him are eight grandchildren, Cory (Laney) Brown of Cottonwood, CA, Lindsey (Mike) Richards of North Platte, Sarah Brown of Kearney, Justin and Cody Brown of North Platte, Jessica (Andy) Holtorf of Papillion, and Clayton and Keenan Brown of Kearney; great grandchildren Braxton and Adaleigh Richards of North Platte, Oscar Holtorf of Papillion and Carter Brown of Cottonwood, CA.
Billy served with the National Guard for 19 years, working as a cook when they went to camp. He retired as a master sergeant.
Billy enjoyed bowling with the senior league, and did leather work for many years. Using his handle of “Leather Man”, he kept in touch with friends through his CB radio. His yard and home were evidence of the many hours he spent working on them. He especially liked decorating his home and yard for Christmas and won several awards for his efforts. He was also a member of the Eagles.
Preceding him in death were his parents; a sister Carleen Tenpenny; and a brother Leonard Brown.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society or to the donor''s choice.
Services were Monday, June 25 at 10 a.m. at Adams and Swanson Chapel with Job Vigil officiating. Those wishing to do so may sign the register book Sunday noon to 6 p.m. and on line condolences may be made at www.adamsswanson.com. Adams and Swanson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
