Betty  Lou  O'Brian Long
     Betty Lou O''Brian Long, 87 of Mullen, passed away May 18 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
     Lou was born November 16, 1924 to Clarence and Alva (Jackson) Rutledge in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating in 1942, she worked at the Brookfield Army Airbase as a secretary where she met and married Claude O''Brian. They were married October 11, 1943.
     After WW II they returned to the O''Brian family ranch southwest of Mullen. Six children were born to this union: Sandra Marie, Virginia Lou, Joanne Rutledge, James Patrick, Mary Jane and John Michael.
     She was Worthy Matron in the Eastern Star Chapter, active I St. Joseph''s Episcopal Church as a Sunday school teacher, Alter Guild and Episcopal Church Women for many years.
     At 41, she was widowed as a result of an accident. In 1967 she married Emmett Long.
     She loved to golf, bowl play cards, fish, camp, garden and cook. Family was a high priority for Lou, especially caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful hostess and always had a pot of coffee going. No one could ever say they walked away from her table hungry.
     Survivors include her children Virginia (Bob) Thompson, Joanne (Gary) Johnson, James Patrick (Cheryl), John Michael (Sherri), step children Dan (Kay) Long, Marsha (Melvin) Sukup brother-in-law Ed Goldbeck, sister-in-law Nina Rutledge, seventeen grandchildren, five step grandchildren, twenty-eight great grandchildren, eleven great step-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
     She was preceded in death by her husband''s Claude and Emmett, her daughters Sandra and Mary Jane, Step-son Bob, and granddaughter Patricia.
     Services will be held at St. Josephs Episcopal Church Thursday, May 24 at 10 a.m. MDT. Interment will be Thursday at 2 p.m. MDT at Eclipse Cemetery following the funeral services. Memorials will be for St. Joseph''s Episcopal Church, Eclipse Church and Cemetery or donor''s choice.
     Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23, from 9 a.m. MDT at the Mullen Funeral Home.
     Mullen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
