The North Platte High softball team competed in the Lincoln Public Schools Classic tournament on Saturday. Despite going 1-2 on the day, North Platte showed that they are capable of playing high-caliber softball.
In the first game, North Platte faced the Fremont Tigers and jumped out to a 9-1 lead in the first inning. North Platte never looked back on the way to an 11-2 victory.
North Platte was led at the plate by Rachel Kosmacek, who went 2 for 3, Kaite Franzen (2-4) and Hanna Hays (2-4.)
Franzen got the win on the mound for the Lady Dawgs.
In the second game, North Platte faced the Class A No. 6 ranked Lincoln Southwest Silverhawks.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when North Platte Catcher Mikenzi Wiseman stepped to the plate with Hays on base. Wiseman hit a line-drive double to the left-field fence. Hays scored from second and the Lady Dawgs had a 1-0 lead.
Southwest scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to go up, 2-1.
North Platte scored two more runs in the sixth. Willow Chitty scored on a Kosmacek single and courtesy runner Abby Jones scored on a fielder's choice, putting North Platte back on top 3-2.
Southwest tied the game on a solo home-run in the bottom of the sixth and the game went into extra innings.
The game would be decided by an international tie-breaker.
North Platte failed to plate their runner in the tie-breaker, giving Southwest a chance to win the game in the bottom of the eighth.
Southwest started with their runner at second and their lead off hitter at the plate. The Southwest batter hit a grounder to third baseman Kylie Engleman whose throw to third-base sailed high and wide, rolling to left-field and allowing the runner to score and give Southwest the win.
Chitty led North Platte’s offense, going 2-4 at the plate. Wiseman was 1-3 with an RBI, and Kosmacek was 1-4 with an RBI.
In the final game of the day North Platte faced the 2012 Class B State champion, Lincoln Pius X Thunderbolts.
Pius X jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, scoring two runs on consecutive errors by North Platte third-baseman Engleman. North Platte would drop the contest 7-1.
North Platte was led by Franzen who went 4-4, Hays 2-4 and Abby Jones 1-2. Marissa Ramos took the loss for the Lady Dawgs.
North Platte (3-3) will be in action in a double-header Tuesday, Sept. 2 in Lexington, Then on Thursday, Sept. 4, the Lady Dawgs head to Kearney (vs Lincoln East and Hastings), and on Saturday, Sept. 6 they play in McCook at the McCook Invitational.
