Softball: Lady Dawgs start season 2-1Tell North Platte what you think

The North Platte High Lady Bulldogs, ranked No. 10 by the Lincoln Journal Star, are off to a 2-1 start to the softball season.

The Lady Dawgs won their season opener Aug. 21 in Hastings against Adams Central. North Platte jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, thanks to sophomore Kylie Engleman's double that scored two.

Senior Mikenzi Wiseman added a two-run double in the fifth to put the Lady Dawgs up 10-0, giving them a run-rule victory.

Seniors Kaite Franzen and Jenny Keck shared pitching duties in the shutout.

North Platte faced Omaha Gross Catholic and Omaha Skutt Catholic in a double-header Aug. 28 in Hastings.

In the first game, the Lady Dawgs started slow and made errors, but managed to lead 2-1 after the first inning. Gross tied the game in the second.

In the fourth inning, North Platte’s Jenny Keck tripled and Senior Rachel Kosmacek doubled to score Keck for the go-ahead and eventual game winning run as North Platte squeaked out a 3-2 victory.

Senior Marissa Ramos pitched all seven innings and earned the win.

Sophomore Willow Chitty went 2-3 at the plate to lead North Platte’s attack. Kosmacek and Wiseman both went 1-2.

In game two of the double-header, North Platte faced the No. 3 team in Class B -- Omaha Skutt. Skutt took a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to four consecutive singles.

North Platte answered in the third inning with three runs to take a 3-2 lead over the defending Class B state champions.  North Platte maintained the lead into the seventh inning, with Skutt scored a run to tie the game. An errant throw by catcher Mikenzi Wiseman went between the legs of first baseman Kaite Franzen, allowing Skutt to score two more runs and take a 5-3 lead.

North Platte threatened in the bottom of the seventh. The first two batters reached base; however, a Skutt defender caught a blooper fly by Marissa Ramos and turned it into a double-play. Engleman grounded out to end the game.

For North Platte, Franzen went 2-4, Wiseman was 2-3 with an RBI and Engleman was 1-3 with an RBI.

Jenny Keck pitched all seven innings for North Platte.

North Platte traveled to Lincoln on Aug. 30 for the LPS Classic Tournament.  North Platte faced Fremont at 11 a.m., Lincoln Southwest at 3 p.m. and Lincoln Pius X at 5 p.m.
