The Connection shelter during construction, July 2009.
On Aug. 14, the Connection homeless shelter celebrated the fact that is has been 20 years since we filed our articles of incorporation, recevieved our 501(c) (3) status and became a formal shelter, when Robert Grosh donated the former Tucker's restaurant building to us at 511 N. Jeffers. The intent of our celebration was to thank our supporters who have made monetary donations, hired day labor from our pool of clients, volunteered at or donated to our Thrift Connection and Construction Connection, answered phones, hosted Bible studies and church services, brought in meals or helped in some way, large or small.
With your generous spirit, we have served roughly 10,000 people with not only the basics of food, clothing and a safe shelter, but provided case management, moral support, life skills classes, referrals, day labor and client services such as haircuts, prescriptions and bus passes for work and appointments.
Two special friends of the shelter were recognized -- Rod Dye of Cohagen Transfer for going to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center to pick up donated foods since 2003, and Chuck Scripter for his help with repairs and projects at the shelter and the thrift stores.
Through the years, we have worked to earn your respect by holding clients accountable, constructing a debt-free building and running two thrift stores that are an asset to North Platte and the surrounding communities.
We are not content to rest until we have, on staff, a mental health professional, expanded our new family education program, improved our thrift stores, expanded our educational programs, developed a cottage industry for employment and revenue purposes, and funded a permanent supportive housing option, all of which will help our tax base.
Our board and staff are committed to helping each aspect move one step closer to home.
So, to all of you, we say -- we would not be here without you and we ask you to be alongside us as we look to the future.
