When you cross barrel racing with mud trucks in Maxwell, it’s called a "brodeo.”

On Saturday night, 25 four-wheel drive vehicles competed against the clock to circle around the barrels in a sea of mud.

The brodeo was part of Maxwell Heritage Days.

Each vehicle was timed as it ran through a course that is similar to rodeo barrel races. The top five went to the finals with a chance to take home cash.

It can be noted that horses can easily race around the barrels faster than mud trucks, but horses have the advantage of a dry track and the ability to make sharp turns. Trucks must muck through the mud and turn as quickly as possible without sliding into the wall.

The announcer told the crowd to make some noise and the crowd obliged, shouting and cheering to urge their favorite driver onward.

After two runs, Derrick Johnson was victorious for the fourth consecutive year in his Chevrolet S10. Johnson won $1,000 for the victory.

"I'm in the money. I'll be buying breakfast," he said afterwards.

Dan Kelly was the runner up, and received $400 for his efforts. The third place paid $100 to Mike Hansen.

After the barrel races, spectators were treated to a tug of war and freestyle mud races to conclude the night's activities.
