Janel Gamble Godfrey

A woman was killed Friday night in a single car wreck on the east end of Sutherland.

Investigators say Janel Gamble Godfrey, 34, was headed north on Prairie Trace Road around 6:30 p.m., traveling at a high rate of speed. She hit the rail road crossing traveling as fast as 45 miles an hour.

The crossing has a steep approach. The car went airborne over the tracks, landed and slid across U.S. Highway 30, and went northwest into a yard at the corner of the intersection.

The car went though a small tree and ran directly into a larger one.

The airbag deployed on the 1993 Toyota Camry, Investigative Sgt. Dustin Achenbach of the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said. A Sutherland emergency medical technician witnessed the accident and administered aid promptly. The Sutherland rescue unit responded and transported Godfrey to the Great Plains Health med center, assisted by a North Platte emergency medical crew.

Gamble died of head and chest injuries. Seatbelts were not in use and alcohol was likely a factor, Achenbach said.

She is survived by her husband Brad Godfrey and two teenage children. A memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Odean Colonial Chapel in North Platte.

She grew up in Sutherland and graduated from Sutherland High School in 1998. She married Jason Melvin and two children, Alexis and Hunter, were born.

In 2003 Janel graduated from Joseph's College of Beauty. She was self-employed hairstylist at Studio 54.

On June 4, 2010, she married Bradley Allen 'Brad' Godfrey in North Platte on Jule 4. 2010. They lived in Sutherland. She was a volunteer for the Rape and Domestic Abuse Program and Relay for Life. She found beauty in everything, according to her obituay -- most of all, Janel loved her kids and her dog, Charlie. She also had a special place in her heart for her niece, Ashlynn.

Survivors include her husband, Brad, children, Hunter and Alexis Melvin, and parents, Julie and Bud Gamble, all of Sutherland; her sister, Kristen Gamble (fiancé, Jerrod Mai), of Harrisburg, NE; grandparents, Tom and Barb Kennedy, Anita Oliveros and Vern Lenz, all of Sutherland; grandparents-in-law, Marvin and Belva Godfrey, and their son, Bryan 'The Duke' Godfrey, all of North Platte; a niece, Taylynn, and nephew, Hayden; her sisters-in-law, Tabitha Aloi and Marie Godfrey, of North Platte; many aunts and uncles and other family.

Cremation was chosen. Family inurnment will be in the Riverview Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Rape and Domestic Abuse Program (RDAP).
