Traffic lights were covered with black bags Friday at the intersections of Fourth and Bailey and Fourth and Chestnut in North Platte, another step in their removal.

The stop lights have been there for decades. The city council agreed May 20 that the lights should be discontinued due to decreasing traffic.

Stop signs were installed the next day on Chestnut and Bailey streets, and the traffic lights flashed yellow on Fourth for nearly two months.

Removal of the lights was recommended in March 2013 by the consulting firm, Schemmer Architects of Lincoln, who studied traffic patterns throughout the city.
