For the first time in decades, we in Nebraska have a candidate running for statewide office that I can support without reservation. That candidate is Chuck Hassebrook for governor.
I met Hassebrook years ago with I worked for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission out of its Norfolk office and I was impressed then with what he had going as director of the Center for Rural Affairs — advocating for farmers and rural communities.
My interest became more personal when my family got caught up in the farm crisis of the 1980s. during that frightening time, it seemed to me that the Center for Rural Affairs was the only organization in the state doing its best to help those of us who’d been shell-shocked by the sudden price squeeze and outrageously high costs of production, including interest rates up to 18 percent.
I believe there were a lot of small operators who stayed in business because of help and support from Hassebrook and his crew.
I’ve remained aware of Hassebrook ever since and can’t help believing his passion for sustainable agriculture and superior public education will make him the best possible governor for the State of Nebraska.
