Charges have been dropped against a 19-year-old Hershey man who was charged July 7 with first-degree sexual assault.
The Lincoln County sheriff's office initially acted on a report that a teenage girl was in the emergency room of Great Plains Health center. The girl said she had been sexually assaulted.
Deputies took her to the Bridge of Hope Child Advocacy Center in North Platte, where she was interviewed and received a medical examination, according to a sheriff’s statement.
Casey Mitchell was arrested, charged and held on a $250,000 bond. But, the investigation continued and the evidence was less than convincing, according to a sheriff's spokesman.
On July 10, Mitchell was released on his own recognizance and on July 16, the county attorney dropped the charges.
Chief Deputy Roland Kramer said the dismissal was sought in the interests of justice, due to a lack of supporting evidence. He declined to elaborate, citing the age of the girl.
The county agreed to pick up the $48 in court costs.
