The point chases are close in all divisions and the IMCA competitors did their best to cash in with top finishes at the Lincoln County Raceway in North Platte on Saturday night.
Scoring Saturday night Thunder Feature victories were Bryan Herrick, Kyle Werkmeister, Kyle Bond and Charlie Blowers.
Veteran wheelman Bryan Herrick of Curtis floated into the lead just after the halfway point and was able to drive away with an IMCA Northern Sport Modified victory.
The Rubber Duck-themed Herrick hotrod started in the fifth row. Doing his best to avoid last lap incidents, Terry Dressel of North Platte was the second across the finish line to earn runner-up honors. Earning third place accolades was North Platte’s Robbie Kosmacek, who won an early heat race and led laps earlier in the feature.
Nearly going without a caution, the IMCA Stock Cars put on a whale of show that contained lots of passing and side-by-side racing. Kyle Werkmeister of Maywood led the final eight laps to earn the victory. On his rear bumper for many of the waning laps was brother Casey Werkmeister, also of Maywood.
Casey tried to work his magic to gain the lead, but Kyle returned the favor and held on, forcing Casey to settle for second place overall.
Having a stellar showing lately in the loaded Stock Car division, Jim Hagan of Lexington finished third in the feature.
Don Schweitzer of Johnstown, Colo. and Casey Werkmeister won early heat races in the division.
Snaring the lead on the third circuit, Gibbon Gambler Kyle Bond drove away from the rest of the field and cruised to the feature win in the IMCA Hobby Stock division. Bond started in the fifth row and it only took him three laps to get to the point, where he never looked back.
Overton’s Jacob Olmstead was the runner-up after recovering from an opening lap incident in the heat race.
Gaining confidence and scoring a podium finish was Cozad’s Tyson Canas with a third-place drive from his second row start. Kevin Hagan of Eddyville and Bond were the heat race winners in the division.
Benefitting greatly from some Mopar Magic and dynamic driving skills, Charlie Blowers of Arnold won the IMCA Sport Compact feature after grabbing the lead on the fifth lap and finishing strong. Looking to continue his streak of wins, Andrew Baumgardner of North Platte worked his way into contention for the lead and tried numerous times to gain the lead, but was forced to settle for second place honors.
Rounding out the top honors for the Sport Compacts was Devin Bjorklund of Cozad in his rookie year in the division with a third place run.
