Lake Maloney resident charged with shootingTell North Platte what you think

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 77-year-old man Friday who allegedly took some shots toward some teenage boys on May 23.

The shots came to the attention of law enforcement after a caller told a 911 dispatcher that shots had been fired at Lake Maloney. The report came in at 7:09 p.m. May 23.

The caller said Donald Vanderploeg, 77, shot at teenage boys in a boat near Goose Island. The boys apparently got too close to Vanderploeg’s property, tangling up with some rope on his dock.

The boys told investigators that Vanderploeg took offense and fired a rifle in their direction.

Nearby adults said they heard shots too, according to the sheriff’s statement.

Deputies tried for several hours to contact Vanderploeg, but could not find him. The investigation continued, and he was finally charged on Friday, June 13 with terroristic threats and use of a firearm to commit a felony.

No bond has been set yet.
