The 18U North Platte Express softball team is out to a 4-1 start to the 2014 season.
The Express went 2-1 to open the season at a Lexington tourney May 25 and swept a doubleheader May 29 against the Hastings Flames and Gothenburg Angels in Gothenburg.
In Lexington, the Express faced the Cozad Classics in game 1 and got off to a rocky start, losing 2-3. Pitcher Kaite Franzen took the loss for the Express.
In game two, the Express were firing on all cylinders as the defeated the Holdrege Heat 8-1, behind in-the-park home runs by Tracy Blake and Katelin Schultze.
Schultze got the win for the Express.
The Express used a walk-off triple by Tracy Blake to come from behind and defeat the McCook Rebels 10-8.
Mikenzi Wiseman paced the Express going 3-3 with a triple. Jordyn Kleinow started in the circle for North Platte and was relieved by Schultze before Franzen came in to record the save.
For the tourney, Wiseman went 5-8, Franzen 3-7, Schutlze 3-7, and Blake 2-6 at the plate.
At Gothenburg, the Express faced the Hastings Flames in the opening game of the doubleheader.
North Platte had a strong pitching performance by Schultze and recorded a 4-2 win.
In the second game, North Platte pitcher Franzen started out a little shaky against Gothenburg, giving up three hits in the first inning, but then she settled in and shut down the Gothenburg hitters to get the 5-1 win.
Next, North Platte will be in action June 6-8 at the 24-team "Thunder Down Under" tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.
