LINCOLN-North Platte High School freshman Kort Steele finished fourth at the Nebraska State Golf Meet at Holmes Park Golf Course on Thursday.
Steele finished with a total score of 141, to finish with his first state medal. On the first day of the two day competition on Wednesday, Steele shot an even par 72 shots. Then in the second round, he improved on that with a 69.
Omaha Creighton Prep senior Ben Maschka won the Class A championship with a total of 136 with a score of 68 on both days. Clayton Peterson of Lincoln Southeast was second with 137 and Alex Schaake, a sophomore also from Creighton Prep who won the team state title, was third at 139.
Steele was the only freshman to medal at the meet. It is the best finish for an NPHS golfer since 2006 when Sean Dawson finished tied for fourth place.
Before his performance at state, Steele won the district championship on May 19 with a score of 79. He defeated Nolan Zikas of Papillion-LaVista to win the A-4 title at Yankee Hill Country Club in Lincoln.
As a team, NPHS just missed qualifying for state as a team. The Bulldogs finished fourth at districts.
