Denise DiGiovanni has resigned from the North Platte schools, just a month after it was announced she would be the principal at Jefferson Elementary for the 2014-15 school year.

DiGiovanni was intended to replace George Schere at Jefferson. Schere resigned to take a similar job in Hastings.

Associate Superintendent Tami Eshleman announced April 24 that Schere was leaving and DiGiovanni would replace him. Eshleman said the school district’s administrative team was all set for the next school year.

DiGiovanni was also the director of the High Ability Learning program as well as the principal at Hall Elementary in 2013-14.

DiGiovanni had been in North Platte for 15 years. She is a graduate of Stapleton High School. She came to North Platte in 1999 after teaching for three years in Emerson.

DiGiovanni taught fourth grade at McDonald Elementary School. In 2007, she became the High Ability Learner (HAL) Coordinator. She was an instructional coach for three years as well.

Eshleman said Wednesday that interviews are underway for a new Jefferson principal.

Hall

On May 13, Superintendent Marty Bassett asked the school board to approve the closure of Hall Elementary, where only four kindergartners were enrolled and there were less than 10 students enrolled in another class. However, dozens of parents protested and the board agreed to keep Hall open at least for another year.

Principal Mary Derby, who oversees Washington Elementary, is intended to take over at Hall and supervise both schools, Eshleman said in April.

Hall, located on the north side of North Platte, has operated for 100 years.

Staff changes

The school board accepted DiGiovanni’s resignation Tuesday, along with the resignations of Hiedi Fessler, Darrell Howitt, Monica Kramer and Traci Foster.

The board approved the hiring of teachers Ryan Province, Joshua Johnson, Taryn Oliver, Brooks Greene, Brandi Anderson, Christopher Boettcher and Bethany Boettcher.

The board also closed the doors to discuss unspecified personnel matters.
