A Wyoming man drove his car right into a semi-truck inside Bailey Yard around 2 a.m. Sunday and ended up in a Kearney hospital.

The man, Kerry Hoffard of Pine Haven, Wyo., is not an employee of Union Pacific.

The Lincoln County Sheriff Office as well as a North Platte rescue team went to the yard to check out the strange accident at 2:04 a.m.

Jeffery Howard of North Platte, who was driving the truck, told investigators he was going east on a narrow road when he saw the car coming at him.

Howard said he pulled his truck as far to the edge of the road, near a set of railroad tracks, as possible to avoid a collision, but Hoffard ran right into him in his 2002 Buick LeSabre.

He said Hoffard did not move over as he approached.

Hoffard’s Buick hit the truck, essentially, head on. Hoffard suffered serious head injuries and was eventually transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Investigators said Hoffard apparently had been drinking and was not wearing a seatbelt. He was cited for trespassing. Further charges are pending, according to the sheriff’s office.

Howard was driving a white 2006 Columbia Freightliner 112 Tanker Truck, hauling diesel fuel. He was not injured.
