Mother Nature provided bright sunshine and moderate temperatures Thursday for the Class C district track meet at Hershey.

Athletes from eight schools competed. The top two finishers in each event qualified for state, except in the relays. The winning relay team from each district advances along with the next five fastest relay times across the state.

Kearney Catholic took first in team totals in both the boys and girls divisions and St. Pat’s finished second in both divisions.

Cambridge was third in the boys and Arapahoe was third in the girls.

Cambridge had the most gold medal winners in the boys division, with five individual wins and two relay victories. 

The Kearney Catholic girls took home a bundle of medals – earning gold medals in seven individual events and two relays.

For the St. Pat’s boys, Mark Mayfield and Alex Harms finished 1-2 in the 110 hurdles. Harms also won the discus and finished second in the 300 hurdles. 

Teammate Andrew O’Neill finished second in the triple jump. 

St. Pat’s Drew McClellen won the pole vault with a vault of 13’ 6” and teammate Jacob Derrickson was second at 12’ 2”.

Collin Meusch of Kearney Catholic swept the distance races, taking first in the 800, 1600 and 3200 meters. Teammate Harrison Pearse was a close second in the both the 1600 and 3200.

T. J. Gregory of Cambridge qualified in four events, taking first in the 100, 200 and long jump plus running a leg on the 4x100 relay team. 

Stapleton-McPherson County finished 1-2 in the high jump, thanks to Laramie Fowler and Alex Hinkle.

The St. Pat’s Lady Irish qualified three girls in individual events. Anna O’Malley won the 800 and was second in the 1600. Zandra Carlini was second in the discus and Katie Montgomery was second in the pole vault. 

Three other Irish girls qualified on the winning 4x800 relay team -- Peyton Irish, Riley Nitsch and Bree Saner. Anna O’Malley was the fourth member of the relay team, qualifying for her third state event.   

Kearney Catholic’s Paige Hervert led individual gold medal winners with first place finishes in the 100, 200, long jump and triple jump.

The state meet will be May 23-24 at Omaha Burke Stadium.
