Don't try to tell SPVA athletes that global warming is a fact. The Southern Platte Valley Association junior high track teams met Thursday in the unseasonable cold in Hershey.

Winds gusted to 35 miles an hour and heavy rains mixed with sleet fell through the morning. Kimball arrived late due to snow in the panhandle and had to scratch from the morning field events.

The pole vault was canceled after the first round, as vaulters hands were slipping from the poles, putting them at risk of dangerous falls. Coaches voted to cancel the event.

Field event athletes were allowed to jump and throw in their sweat suits because temperatures and wind chill hovered near freezing. The weather improved slightly as the rain stopped later, but chilly temperatures and wind prevailed throughout the day.

Trophies were awarded for the top three schools in both seventh and eighth grade boys and girls divisions.

In the girls division, Hershey seventh graders won, with 138 points. North Platte St. Patrick’s placed second with 85 points and Chase County was third with 80.

In the eighth grade girls competition, Sutherland earned a hard fought victory over second place Hershey, 118.33 to 110.33. Chase County was third with 80.33.

In the boys’ competition, Sutherland seventh grade won with 99 points. Perkins County finished second with 85 and Chase County took third with 81. Chase County won the eighth grade with 128.5 points. St. Patrick’s came in second with 88 and Perkins County scored 61 to take third.

Four seventh grade girls won multiple events. Haley Homan took first in the 100 hurdles, the triple jump and ran a leg on the winning 4 x 100 relay. Hershey’s Ashley Hassett won the 195 hurdles and helped the 4 x 400 relay to a win. Taylor Williams from Chase County won the 200 and the high jump. Sutherland’s Morgan Burke won both the 800 and 1600 meters.

Sutherland’s Bailee Fear paced the eighth grade girls with wins in the 100, long jump and in the 4 x 100. Peyton Fiedler of Chase County won the 400 and 800. Myranda Humphrey took first in the discus and triple jump.

Three seventh grade boys had multiple wins. Hunter Melvin of Sutherland won the 100, 200 and on the 4 x 400 relay.   Hershey’s Eli Huebner won the 800 and 1600. Aaron Fay, Perkins County, won the long jump and on the 4 x 100 relay.

Eighth grader James Schroll of St. Patrick’s led all medal winner for the day as he scored four wins in the 100, 200, long jump and on the 4 x 100 relay. Byron Rowley won the 195 hurdles and high jump for Kimball. Chase County’s Jack Bauerle won the shot and discus.

Many of the athletes will be checking state standings to see if they qualify for the junior high state meet, which will be held in Gothenburg May 17. The top 25 in each event qualify.
