Arriving in Cheyenne
Big Boy No. 4014 arrived in Cheyenne, Wyo. on Thursday, marking the end of its first long trip since 1961.
The mammoth 1941 steam locomotive will be retrofitted in Cheyenne for operation under its own power as a goodwill symbol of Union Pacific’s railroad heritage.
The restoration is expected to take 3-5 years.
In the 1940s and 50s, No. 4014 pulled heavy shipments of materials and supplies through the Rocky Mountains.
On this trip, it was propelled by two modern locomotives from California to Cheyenne, one in the front and one in the back.
No. 4014 traveled 1,031,205 miles in its 20 years in prior service, Union Pacific said.
