Madalynn Doughty became the third North Platte High School girls' soccer player in three years to sign with the University of Nebraska-Kearney on April 14.

Doughty will follow former Lady Bulldogs Breezy Jahnke and Jackie Paloucek in playing for the Lopers. Jahnke signed with UNK in 2012 and Paloucek did the same in 2013.

Doughty said that she is glad that she will have some former teammates to make her feel more comfortable as she moves on to the next level.

"I am excited to play with people I used to play with," she said. "It's going to be a fun experience."

Doughty has had a superlative athletic career at NPHS. She has also starred in volleyball and basketball for the Lady Bulldogs. But the favorite sport for the 5-foot tall Doughty is soccer.

The four-year starter for NPHS said that she is thankful to have the opportunity to play soccer in college.

The womens' soccer program at UNK is only five years old. In 2009, the Lopers began their inaugural season under Coach Mike Munch. A couple of months before the 2012 season however, Munch resigned unexpectedly. John Maessner, a former Major League Soccer player, was named interim coach and he continues to hold the position.

This past fall, UNK went 8-8-2. Doughty said that UNK's status as an upstart program in NCAA Division II really appealed to her.

"It was a new program when (Maessner) came in and he's turning it into something big," she said. "I am excited to go into a new program and help them accomplish big things."

Besides following Jahnke and Paloucek, Doughty is also following the trail set by her two older brothers. Marcus and Mason Doughty both attended UNK and Madalynn said that didn't hurt either.

"All of my brothers have went there so I know the campus," Doughty said. "It's like a family tradition."
