NPHS coach Danny Whitney said that his team lost its composure.

"It was certainly a learning experience for us," he said. "We fell away from what we wanted to do as a team."

Both teams battled in the first half. But 30 minutes into the game, Jose Haro scored on an assist from Jesus Martinez Zuniga to give Grand Island a 1-0 lead.

Nearly ten minutes later, the roles were reversed. Haro dribbled the ball toward the goal on the right side before he crossed it to Zuniga who slid and knocked the ball into the goal to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead right before halftime.

North Platte (2-3) got back into the game when Brady Mason fired a ball from 20 yards away that went past a jumping Omar Torres and into the net to make it 2-1 in the 47th minute.

But the Bulldogs squadered the momentum six minutes later by committing a penalty in the goal box. On the penalty kick, Marvin Juarez Ramirez beat Dakota Guenin to make it a two-goal game again.

It became 4-1 after another penalty kick that was made by Haro in the 68th minute.

Grand Island (3-3) got another PK as John Albers slipped by Guenin and the keeper for North Platte knocked Albers to the grass before he could shoot. Guenin was given a red card and he was replaced by freshman Will Phillips. Phillips stopped Albers on the penalty kick.

The Islanders closed out the scoring with a goal by Angel Florian Varela.

"We were down 2-0 at halftime and we were working on getting back into the game," Whitney said. "We had a couple of unfortunate plays in the box and when you fall down 2-0, you can't afford to have those plays, especially against a good team like GI."
