The Minden Whippets were a late addition to the Booster Club Invitational track meet Saturday, but being last to the dance didn't stop them from taking first place in the girls’ competition.

Minden scored 89 team points, squeaking past North Platte St. Pat's, who finished second with 83.5 points.

The Irish took first in the boys meet, earning 106 points, outdistancing the Minden boys, which had 75 points.

St. Pat’s Drew McClellen won the pole vault, clearing a record setting 14 feet. McClellen cleared the height on his third attempt to eclipse the old meet record of 13 ft. 6 in.

St. Pat's placed first in two other events. Alex Harms won the discus and Andrew O’Neill took the gold in the triple jump.

Minden had a total of three first place medal winners.

Wallace’s Tanner Clough won the 3200 meter run, leading Wallace to sixth in the boys meet. Clough was the only other boy from a Lincoln County school to win a first-place medal.

In the girls competition, Minden’s totaled six first-place finishes to make the difference in team scoring. The Lady Irish were able to keep it close even though they only had two first-place finishes.

The girls 800 meters was one of the most exciting races of the day.

St. Pat’s runner Peyton Irish inched to victory over Wauneta-Palisade’s Sydnee Harchelroad, getting the win after both girls clocked in virtual identical times of 2.39.90.

St. Pat's other first-place finish came in the 4 x 800 meter relay. At one time St. Pat's trailed Stapleton-McPherson County by eight seconds, but the Irish made up the distance with the last two legs of the race, as anchor Anna O’Malley pulled away for an easy victory.

Hershey placed third in the girls competition, led by an outstanding performance by Maegan Hiatt.

Hiatt was first in the 100 meter hurdles, first in long jump, second in high jump and ran a leg in the 4x400 meter relay, where the Panthers place second.

When her mother, Kathy Hiatt, was asked if her daughter got her athletic ability from her, she laughed and said “Maegan says the only thing she inherited from me was her blonde hair.”

Regardless of where the skills came from, the senior has been a consistent athetic standout for the Panthers.

The Sutherland girls finished sixth. Kaley Stokey had a career day. She won first place in the pole vault, first in the 300 meter hurdles, second in the 100 meter hurdles and helped the 4 x 100 meter relay to second place.

No other girls from Lincoln county schools had first place medal winners.

Minden girls coach Shawn Wheelock was pleased to be able to attend the meet. They were scheduled in a meet earlier in the week but it was canceled due to the weather. Wheelock said he contacted Sutherland officials late in the week and explained their situation.

“It’s tough to miss a meet this time of the year. The kids need the competition," he said. "I want to thank Sutherland for allowing us to come here. I want them to know that we are truly grateful.”

Hershey head coach Matt Oliver was delighted with the progress his athletes made in the competition this week.

“I am not so much interested in how many points we score," he said. "I just want to see constant improvement. That is what we did today. Every athlete improved. It was an awesome day for us."
