North Platte High School Teacher Leah Purdy received a Shining Star award Tuesday from the North Platte board of education.

Purdy was honored for going over and above expectations as a music and drama teacher, especially for her success directing and promoting the recent student musical play, The Wizard of Oz. All three performances sold out, amounting to 3,600 tickets.

That's the first time that has happened in anyone's memory, Associate Superintendent Tami Eshleman said.

Eshleman also noted that Purdy has been recognized by her alma mater Weslyan University, and selected as an honorary choir director by the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

"Thanks for all you do for our students," School Board President Kathy Phares said.
