A statewide tornado drill will be held Wednesday between 10-11 a.m. CDT (9-10 a.m. MDT).

The drill is part of Nebraska’s Severe Weather Awareness Week from March 24-28. The tornado drill sequence begins with a test tornado watch issued by the storm prediction center at 10 a.m. CDT.

The test tornado watch will be followed by test tornado warnings from the six weather forecast offices that serve Nebraska.

Local sirens will be sounded in the drill.

The North Platte 911 Center urges residents to sign up for CodeRED Weather Warning and Smart911.

CodeRED Weather Warning alert residents in the direct path of severe weather, such as a thunderstorm, tornadoes or flash floods.  Users opt in to receive the alerts they wish to receive and can register landline and mobile phones. There is a CodeRED Mobile Alert app available for both iPhones and Android phones available for download on iTunes and Google Play.

Smart911 is a free service that allows citizens to create a safety profile for their household by providing information before severe weather strikes. Public safety officials can leverage the information in an emergency to better prepare and expedite response to 9-1-1 calls.

There are links to both programs on the city web site, www.ci.north-platte.ne.us

The National Weather Service encourages people, businesses and schools to practice readiness Wednesday during the statewide drill.

The National Weather Service offices will transmit a special message Wednesday through the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Because of the test format of this message, it may or may not activate on certain NOAA weather radios or local stations.
