The Hershey team entered five categories. Judges awarded points for each performance. All nine Hershey entrants advanced to the finals in the contest, which was held at Gering High School.

First place honors in duet acting gave Katie Hoatson and Leona Brown their ticket to state.

With a second place finish, the oral interpretation of drama team qualified. Members are Shianne Hoatson, Kelsey Lafferty, Ashlee Pierce, Krista Schufeldt and Doolin Songster.

Jade Olson placed second informative speaking and will also go on to state competition.

Although they did not qualify for state, the remainder of the Hershey team received sixth place medals. They are Hanna Barner in humorous prose, Margaret Dishman in serious prose and Andie Huebner in entertainment speaking.

K-12 counselor and speech teacher Leona McConnell was happy with the performance. McConnell said it is challenging for students to find time to practice because the members are also in other activities. She said that they worked hard preparing.

“I am so proud of these kids” she said.

Team results:

1. Ainsworth (177) 2. Mitchell (166) 3. Gordon-Rushville (151) 4. Bridgeport (142) 5. Chase County (108) 6. Hershey (102) 7. Valentine (99)  8. Kimbell (8)

Those  placing first, second or third at district travel to the University at Kearney to compete in the NSAA State Speech competition on March 27.
