College theater presents 'Art' Tell North Platte what you think

The North Platte Community College Theater Department will present the Yasmina Reza comedy “Art” at 8 p.m. March 26-29 at the McDonald-Belton Theater on the south campus.

In the play, one of Marc’s best friends, Serge, has just bought a very expensive painting. It’s about 5 by 4-feet, all white with white diagonal lines. To Marc, the painting is a joke, but Serge insists Marc doesn't have the proper standard to judge the work.

Another friend, Ivan, though burdened by his own problems, allows himself to be pulled into the disagreement. Eager to please, Ivan tells Serge he likes the painting. Lines are drawn and the old friends square off over the canvas, using it as an excuse to relentlessly battle one another over various failures. As their arguments become less theoretical and more personal, they border on destroying their friendships.

Ritch Galvan, NPCC theatre instructor and play director notes, “This play takes a humorous look at what we call ‘Art,’ but it really looks seriously on what is friendship.”

He continued, “I am hoping the play touches the audience and enlightens them to the human qualities of art and friendship.”

The play contains harsh language.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors and can be purchased at the door.
