A North Platte man died at a Kearney hospital Tuesday morning after complaining of chest pains the night before from his cell at the Lincoln County jail.Harry J. Statley, 43, died at Good Samaritan Hospital around 6 a.m. March 18. The cause was an apparent heart attack.
Statley was jailed March 2, charged with possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, and been in jail since. A sheriff’s spokesman said he complained of chest pains around 10:30 p.m. and detention officers promptly offered first aid and took him to Great Plains Regional Medical Center for treatment.
He was later taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Following Statley’s death, Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling ordered an autopsy and authorized the North Platte police to conduct an independent investigation. The investigation began Tuesday.
Statley and Daniel Endicott, 28, were both charged with meth distribution on March 2 after police were called to mobile homes in the 2400 block of West Ninth.
Around 4:15 p.m. officers were dispatched to check on a report of people selling drugs there. They found several grams of suspected methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and a large sum of cash.
Endicott remains in jail, held on a $50,000 bond. He faces up to 50 years imprisonment if convicted.
