High winds, heavy snow and slushy roads are blamed for multiple accidents Tuesday afternoon on I-80 east of Brady.

At least three separate wrecks occurred between the 202-205 mile markers, or 3-6 miles east of Brady, according to preliminary information from the Nebraska State Patrol and the Nebraska Department of Roads.

The wrecks involved semi-trucks as well as a snowplow and car. About 300 gallons of diesel fuel was reportedly spilled from one of the trucks.

The wrecks occurred in the eastbound lane between 1:15 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.

Poor visibility on the slushy highway apparently caused the drivers to lose control, according to a statement from the department of roads.

There were no reports of injuries in the initial information.

Eastbound traffic was diverted to U.S. Highway 30 from Brady to Gothenburg. One eastbound lane re-opened around 3:15 and both were clear at 3:46 p.m.

I-80 was close in both directions at Cozad at 1:41 p.m. due to slush and in slated to reopen around 4:45 p.m., the department of roads said.

North and south too

Also, Nebraska Highway 92 was closed at 3:16 p.m. Tuesday afternoon from south of Stapleton to Merna -- a 40 mile stretch -- due to blowing snow, drifting and vehicles blocking the road.

On Nebraska Highway 47 near the Dawson-Custer county line, an accident was reported at 2:23 p.m. NDOR said. The road remained open.

And, Nebraska Highway 23 was closed at 2:43 p.m. in both directions at Curtis due to severe driving conditions.
