Republican Bryan Slone officially became the sixth Republican candidate for Nebraska governor Feb. 28, aiming to better connect all parts of the state.

Slone is a native of the Panhandle as well as a business executive in Omaha. He recently retired as a general partner of Deloitte accounting firm to run for governor.

If elected, Slone said he would focus on reforming the state's tax code to lower overall taxes; utilize the University of Nebraska system to expand educational opportunities and a sense of connectedness through the state, and develop a high-tech 21st Century infrastructure to connect all parts of Nebraska with the global economy.

Slone graduated from Gering High School and attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he earned degrees in accounting and law.

He has worked in Washington, D.C. He served on the staff of U.S. Rep. Hal Daub during the lead-up to the 1986 Tax Reform Act, and then spent two years in the Reagan Administration implementing the act.

He practiced law in Washington, D.C., with a former White House general counsel and opened the first American law practice in the former East Berlin, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, as that former communist country transitioned to a free market economy.

After three years in Europe, he and his wife Leslie returned to Omaha to raise their children.

Slone is the sixth candidate for the Republican nomination in the race.

Gov. Dave Heineman is retiring after this term.
