Mike Groene of North Platte announced Friday that he will run to represent Lincoln County, District 42, in the Nebraska Legislature.Groene is a native Nebraskan and lives at Lake Maloney. He graduated in 1977 from the University of Nebraska Lincoln with a degree in Agriculture Economics and Marketing. Since then, he has worked in sales and management at agriculture related businesses.
Groene is a well known statewide advocate for lower taxes and open, efficient government. He leads the Western Nebraska Taxpayers Association and frequently speaks up on tax and spending issues.
He said his experience has led him "to understand that too often elected officials have only the special interest in which they are involved as their main focus."
If elected, Groene said he will champion local control by seeking to eliminate state mandates, regulations and excessive taxation.
Groene said District 42 needs strong leadership, with only 10 senators representing rural Nebraska in the 49-seat unicameral.
"To be able to represent all area citizens as individuals," Groene will not accept political donations from special interest groups. He said he will only accept help from individual citizens in his campaign.
Groene joins two other candidates in the race for the seat -- Scott Dulin and Roric Paulman. Incumbent Tom Hansen is currently serving his eighth year in the Legislature. He has reached the limit of legislative terms.
Groene said donations can be sent to: Mike Groene for Legislature, 9523 Canal Rd. North Platte NE 69101.
