Lincoln County sheriff’s deputies busted five people early Friday morning who allegedly stole a car, cash and other items Tuesday from a North Platte home.

The North Platte residents were arrested early Friday morning after an intense investigation, and more arrests are likely, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The investigation started Wednesday when a sheriff’s officer was called to a home north of town. A neighbor reported the house had been burglarized. The owner of the house died a week ago. When a neighbor looked in on the place Wednesday, he found the front door broken and property that was apparently missing.

Investigators questioned neighbors and others in the area, who said they saw people leaving the home Tuesday morning.

After talking with family members, investigators found that a large amount of property was missing, including the victim’s car.

An intensive investigation began.

“The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office believes this is one of the most despicable crimes one could commit -- preying on the deceased and elderly,” a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Deputies developed suspects and with help from other law enforcement agencies, several search warrants were served Friday at North Platte homes.

The majority of the stolen property was recovered, including the stolen car as well as a large amount of cash, the sheriff said. Arrested and charged are:

• Todd Wickware, 44, burglary, forced entry. Wickware has two drug charges on his record from more than a decade ago. His bond was set at $25,000.

• Brian E. Spotts, 46, burglary, theft and use of a vehicle in another crime. Spotts has two previous drug arrests on his record from more than a decade ago. Bond: $50,000.

• Kim Spotts, 43, burglary, forced entry, vehicle theft, felon in possession of a firearm. Bond: $50,000.

• Dennis G. Razes, 38, burglary. Razes has two assault charges on his record, from 2002 and 2003. Bond $25,000.

• Tim Roy Leeper, 24, burglary.

Leeper already faces charges of possession of a controlled substance, theft, possession of a firearm during a drug violation and possession of a stolen firearm. He has additional charges pending of shoplifting and criminal mischief. Leeper was arrested on Feb. 8 in the courthouse when he appeared on the most recent charges and tried to take a cigarette break. He served two days, and then posted 10 percent of a $12,500 bond.

Another $25,000 was added to Leeper's bonds.
