Former Lexington Police Officer Terrance Smith has pled guilty to attempted burglary in Dawson County District Court and faces a possible penalty of five years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning announced the plea Friday.
On May 19, officer Smith was on duty when he was caught on video surveillance entering Landmark Implement, Inc., the John Deere dealership. The business was outside the officer’s jurisdiction.
Smith searched through drawers and cabinets of the managers/owners offices before leaving without taking anything of value, the camera showed.
Smith will be sentencing April 28 in Dawson County District Court.
“Law enforcement officers are sworn to uphold the law and must be held accountable for unlawful actions,” Bruning said.
Assistant Nebraska Attorneys General Matt Lierman and George Welch are handling the prosecution.
