A man charged with sexual assault of a child can get out of jail if he comes up with $15,000 bail, following action Thursday in Lincoln County Court.
Wendell Matthews, 52, is charged with having sexual intercourse with a 7-8 year old girl two and half years ago. When he was arrested Feb. 12, bond was initially set at $250,000, but it was reduced by $100,000 Tuesday in court.
Lincoln County Judge Kent Turnbull agreed to reduce the bond. Turnbull said he initially understood that more charges were probable, but no more have been filed.
Matthews waived his right to a preliminary hearing and his case was bound over to district court. He has to come up with 10 percent of $150,000 to get out.
The sex assault complaint was filed with police Dec. 31, alleging that Matthews had sexual intercourse with a girl who is now 10 years old, police said. Reportedly, the assaults happened several times in the victim’s home when she was 7-8 years old, while Matthews was alone with her.
The girl made her statements during interviews at the Bridge of Hope advocacy center in North Platte.
In court, defense attorney Robert Lindemeier said Matthews is not a flight risk or a risk to reoffend. He said his client has children and family, is a full-time student and has no felony record. He said Matthews has not had any contact with the girl for years
