Sons of Pioneers
The world famous Sons of the Pioneers will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28 at the Neville Center for the Performing Arts, sponsored by the North Platte Concert Association.
Founded in 1934, the Sons of the Pioneers have enthralled generations of audiences with songs like “Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds,” “ Cool Water,” “ Happy Trails” and “Ghost Riders in the Sky.”
The Sons of the Pioneers have performed the music of the American West for more than 75 years, celebrating its awesome landscape, its people, its culture and the American Cowboy, according to their website.
“We embrace that heritage and strive to honor it," the group says. "‘Country western’ artists may sing about pickup trucks or their girlfriends. Our songs are unabashed love songs to the West. That's one of the things that make us different.”
Their songs paint unforgettable images and tell stories of horses, cattle, cowboys, night herds, tall timber, cool water, canyons and prairies. Many songs were written by original members, Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, and Roy Rogers (then known as Leonard Sly). They created a new genre and new library of music. Their songs have been recorded by many famous musicians, including Johnny Cash, Frankie Laine, Bing Crosby, Riders in the Sky, Michael Martin Murphy and even the Boston Pops.
Doug Green, who is with Riders in the Sky, a famous Western group who performed in North Platte in 2012, wrote, “There wouldn’t be a Riders in the Sky without the Sons of the Pioneers. They are clearly our western heroes and our inspiration.”
Over the years, the group and their music have appeared in more than 90 movies. Also they have been on numerous radio and television shows, sold millions of recordings and performed in concerts all over the world.
