A female guard at the Scottsbluff County jail was killed over the weekend, the victim of strangulation by a 15-year-old boy, an inmate.

The woman, Amanda Baker, 24, was attacked around 2 a.m. inside a jail cell. She declared brain dead Friday afternoon, about 13 hours after the attack.

Dylan Cardeilhac, 15, is charged with first-degree murder.

Cardeilhac was awaiting trial on robbery charges from last December in Mitchell, about seven miles away, where he allegedly tried to rob a Kwik Stop. He was charged as an adult for the crime. County Attorney Doug Warner told the Gering Citizen that the teen wasn’t in isolation, but in an individual cell in the juvenile section, when he attacked Baker.

The cause of death was determined to be asphyxia by manual strangulation, the Citizen reported Monday.

Baker had worked at the jail for more than a year and a half. She lived in Torrington, Wyo. and was a student at Western Nebraska Community College, the Citizen said. She is survived by a son.

Cardeilhac is also from Torrington, according to the Scottsbluff Star-Herald.
