Sheriff impersonator demands money in phone scamTell North Platte what you think

On Thursday, a telephone scammer, pretending to be from the sheriff's office, called a Lincoln County resident and told them they were about to have a warrant for their arrest.

The caller said the resident could avoid the warrant if they paid some money.

The caller represented his/herself as a sheriff’s office employee from another jurisdiction, but the caller's phone number had a central and western Nebraska 308 area code.

Thinking it was maybe a scam, the resident hung up; then called the number back. Someone answered "Sheriff’s Office," but was clearly still the scammer, Kramer said.

"Neither the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office nor any other sheriff’s office will ever call someone, demanding money because a warrant would be issued," Kramer said.

If anyone ever has a question about these types of calls, Kramer urges them to contact the Lincoln County Sheriff at (308) 535-9599. He said the scammer is probably not from Nebraska, just purchased a cell phone number with a Nebraska area code.
