Police believe a motel clerk has been skimming cash from the North Platte Super 8 since October. They arrested him Thursday, one of two theft arrests in two days.
Police spokesman Rodney Brown said the Super 8 manager said Robert S. Richards, 29, would keep the cash when customers paid cash. Richards allegedly kept the cash and entered the transaction as compensated.
The thefts started on Oct. 5 and continued until the most recent one on Feb. 8, Brown said. The money taken added up to $3,420.90, which makes the crime a felony.
Police were notified of the allegations at noon Wednesday. They questioned Richards on Thursday, then arrested him, Brown said.
His bond is set at $25,000.
The crime is punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment.
An Ogallala man was arrested Tuesday and charged with not paying a washer-dryer set that he rented from the North Platte Rent-a-Center.
On Nov. 27, a police officer went to Rent-a-Center, 410 E. Leota, to check out a report of theft.
A Rent-a-Center employee said that Joseph L. Karr, 25, rented Whirlpool washer and dryer set that is valued at $1,700 but failed to make payments and then failed to return it.
Brown said "following further investigation" it was determined there was probable cause to arrest Karr for felony theft.
On Tuesday, officers were told that Karr was in North Platte, traveling in a black Dodge Durango. The vehicle and Karr were found. He was taken into custody and jailed Wednesday, charged with theft by unlawful taking, according to sheriff's records.
The theft is punishable by up to 20 years imprisonment.
