Mental health support group meetsTell North Platte what you think

Undaunted by temperatures hovering at four degrees, nine persons attended the first mental health support group meeting offered in the community for a couple of years.

The meeting was held at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at 305 West Fifth in North Platte on Feb. 6.

Introductions were made using a numbering system allowing each person to speak for a couple of minutes. The program was presented using the positive book series from Simple Truths entitled The Butterfly Effect. The premise of the "butterfly effect" is that when a butterfly flaps its wings, molecules of air are moved.

Those molecules of air are moved. Those molecules of air bump into other molecules of air and so on until halfway around the world, a tornado is formed. At first, the premise was laughed at and thought preposterous. However, in time, the premise was accorded the status of a scientific law, now known as the law of sensitive dependence upon initial conditions.

Science has shown the butterfly effect to engage with the first movement of any form of matter -- including people.

The evening concluded with group discussion of personal mental conditions. The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 20 at the church starting at 6:15 p.m. Anyone is welcome to attend, however, consideration should be afforded those suffering from mental issues.
