The temperature in North Platte will reach 50 degrees on Thursday, the first of several days of moderate weather, the National Weather Service said Tuesday.

Temperatures have been below freezing since late January, with periodic dips to well-below zero, including a low of 21 below zero on Feb. 6. Meanwhile, snow accumulated to a depth of nearly 9 inches.

All that started to change Tuesday, when the sun shone in partly cloudy skies and the temperature reached the upper 20s, melting some snow in parking lots and on rooftops, and creating long icicles.

The temperature will proceed to the mid-30s Wednesday, with bright sunshine. A south wind will blow at 8-10 miles per hour in the afternoon, the weather service said.

Overnight Wednesday, the temperature will fall to the low 20s, but will soar to nearly 50 Thursday and Friday, and all the way 60 on Sunday.

The daily high is expected to be above 50 degrees at least through Tuesday, the weather service said.
