Here’s some ways to make a good impression and land that job.

Students or adults should begin with their resume. Resumes should include:

• Personal Information: full name, complete address, telephone number

• Objective: state the type of work you want to do

• Education and Training: begin with highest level of education first; remember to list workshops and other training besides formal education

• Work Experience: begin with most recent job; list name and address of employer, employment dates; skills used on the job; and job titles

• Personal Interests: list hobbies, sports and other interests but keep it short

• References: make the list of references available upon request

• Students: may want to add school activities, community involvement and awards

Do not include reasons you left past jobs, photographs, salary information, feelings about travel and relocation, testimonials, or the heading “resume.” And remember to be careful what you put on social media, as many prospective employers check out social media sites.

Proofread your resumes carefully and have someone else check it for you.

Resumes should be no more than one or two pages, so keep it short and concise. Use an easy to read font such as Times New Roman, Garamond, Georgia, Tahoma, Arial, or Helvetica. Use adequate spacing in margins and between sections and lines. You may use bold or italic for headings, just be sure to keep it consistent and be sure to use good quality paper.

There are many on-line sources to aid you in writing and storing resumes, such as www.unl.edu/careers/search-resumes and some companies are already using electronic resumes rather than paper, but it is still all about how you present yourself.

First impressions do count.
