The defense of North Platte St. Pat's was too much for Maxwell on Thursday night as the Lady Irish won 50-18 at the McGahan Activities Center.

"I think our defense wore them down," St. Pat's coach Nathan Stienike said. "(Maxwell) had a lot of energy and they were playing hard. Our depth gave us a big advantage."

The two teams battled in the opening minutes. But St. Pat's (15-3) broke out to a 12-6 lead a little past halfway through the first quarter when Bree Saner scored on an inbound pass. A couple of minutes later, Brittany Lawrence scored inside to make it an eight point game.

Both teams traded baskets for the rest of the quarter and it was 16-8 at the end of the first. But that was where the Irish took over.

Anna O'Malley began the second by making two free throws and then Lawrence got a layup. Toni Caudillo then hit a three off a pass from Lawrence in the post to make it 23-8. Saner scored again and then Peyton Irish scored her first bucket to end the 11-0 run.

"That was big because it was a tight game until then," Stienike said. "Anytime you get runs, it builds confidence."

The Lady Irish had a 28-12 lead and then they held Maxwell (8-7) to only six points in the second half as they closed it out.

"Our defense played really well," Stienike said. "Their six-footer (Josie Cox) got baskets early on and we were worried about how we were going to contain her. But we made some good adjustments. We played up more on her. She hit a couple of shots from the free throw line and after that, Brittany played her more closely."
