Ronald Books filed Tuesday to run for the district 3 county commissioner seat in Lincoln County. Books, 68, said he wants to help support the community.

If elected, he would replace Willis Roethemeyer, who has said he is not going to run again.

District 3 includes south central Lincoln County, as well as the south half of North Platte, and the western part of the county including Wallace, Hershey and Sutherland.

Books, who lives at Lake Maloney, brings an extensive career of public service to the race, having served on the boards of the Chamber of Commerce, the medical center foundation, Nebraskaland Days and noon Rotary, among others.

Books has also been a highway commissioner with the Nebraska Department of Roads for 24 years. He and his father ran a business for a combined 42 years -- a credit bureau and a collection service.

Books said all of that qualifies him for the job.

“Making ends meet, that’s the hardest part of the (commissioner’s) job overall,” he said. “I operated a business, not the same scale of dollars of course, but I know that you have only so many dollars to go so far.”

He said serving on the highway commission is similar work.

“That’s how we function,” he said. “We take public input, help set policy, decide where it’s going to go, develop 1- and 5-year plans, and with NDOR, 20- and 25-year plans.”

"I know how to listen," he said.

Books said he is not unhappy with what the commissioners have been doing.

Books and his wife Lois are members of First United Methodist Church. They have two daughters and two grandsons. They have been married for 46 years.
