Just after 7 p.m. on Sunday, police responded to an apartment complex in the 700 block of E. Philip on the report of an assault, police spokesman Rodney Brown said.

The caller, Roy Delise, 55, told the police that after he and Scott Mehring, 56, argued, Mehring brandished a large knife from a sheath on his hip, threatened to kill him, hit him in the head more than once with the butt and cut his hand with the blade.

Mehring had left, but an officer remembered seeing a man fitting Mehring’s description leaving the building as he arrived, so they looked for him.

Brown said they found a suspect outside the apartments a few moments later who turned out to be Anthony Bennett, 37, not Mehring.

Bennett refused to follow the officer’s orders and ran toward the area of Sun Mart, 601 E Francis. Officers chased and caught him. During a brief struggle, one officer suffered a cut knee when Bennett threw his cell phone at him.

At the same time, police found Mehring east of South Platte Terrace near the entry of Autumn Park Drive. Mehring was detained and following questioning, he was charged with terroristic threats and second-degree assault.

Delise was also charged with assault by mutual consent.

All three men were jailed.

Police also found two plastic bags full of several prescription pills on Bennett when they took him into custody, and he had a clear glass pipe containing a white powder residue of suspected methamphetamine.

Bennett is charged with assault on an officer, possession of a controlled substance - alprazoam), possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, resisting arrest and possession of drug paraphernalia.
