The Maxwell boys' basketball team found themselves in a tough situation on Tuesday in the first round of the South Platte Valley Association basketball tournament as it lost 58-31 to Kimball at North Platte Community College.
Maxwell coach Travis Klein looked at the loss in a positive light.
"I think we handled it well," Klein said. "We gave great effort out there."
Maxwell (2-11) scored the first four points of the game on baskets by Zac Miller and Zac Gregg. But after that, it was all Kimball.
The Longhorns (10-1) tied the game at four with buckets by Jonathon Withrow and Michael Ferguson. Then Kimball's 6-foot-9 center, Mike Daum, took over.
The senior who signed with Division I South Dakota State scored the next four baskets to make it a 12-4 game late in the first quarter.
Jake Reader scored the next basket for Kimball to end the first. Daum, who finished with 25 points, scored again to open the second quarter and cap off a 16-0 run.
That was all the Longhorns needed to run away with the game. It was 34-10 at halftime. Maxwell did have a good third quarter as the Wildcats outscored Kimball 15-11 in the quarter before Daum put on an encore to finish the game.
"We had a lot of open looks in the first quarter that didn't go down," Klein said. "You see those shots not go down and you get a little tight. But Kimball is a good team."
