As a RYLA recipient, the students attend Camp RYLA with other Nebraska students.

Camp RYLA is a six-day co-ed leadership camp held July 22-25, 2014, in the Nebraska National Forest near Halsey, about 80 miles north of North Platte. At Camp RYLA, students have an opportunity to participate in leadership training, learn from outstanding individuals with varied backgrounds, educations, careers and interests, and participate in various recreational and friendly competitions. Activities at Camp RYLA are designed to develop leadership skills through problem solving, self-confidence and a network of friends, and communication and team building. Students also gain an appreciation of the value of service and the importance of community and the role of Rotary, locally and internationally.

Prior RYLA recipients have reported, “RYLA is a great way to learn to communicate with other people and build teamwork, along with building leadership skills to help you make a difference in your community.” Participants have particularly enjoyed the outdoor activities, stating “The best part was going on the zip line and the high wire. They were scary, but a lot of fun.”

With respect to the leadership programs and speakers, recipients report, “I loved hearing all of the speakers talk about all the places they had been, and the things they had done,” and “I love to travel so hearing about the countries all of those amazing women had been to was very exciting. I would definitely recommend the camp.”

Young men have found the camp instrumental in developing leadership skills, noting “RYLA was a great experience for me. I had a really fun time meeting people from all over the state with some of the same interests as me,” and “RYLA taught me a lot about how to be a good leader. We had a lot of fun and many fun times that I will remember for a long time.”

The Rotary Clubs of North Platte sponsor area students and provide the transportation to and from Camp. There is no cost to students selected to attend Camp RYLA. After students return from Camp RYLA, they are asked to visit a North Platte Rotary Club to share their camp experience with members of the Rotary Club and encouraged to work with a North Platte Rotary Club on a service project that allows them to put into effect leadership skills developed at Camp RYLA.

Lincoln County high school students currently in their sophomore or junior year of high school who are interested in applying for the 2014 Rotary Youth Leadership Award, should go to www.greatplainsryla.org. Area high schools will be receiving DVDs and information on the award and camp in the coming weeks, as well.

Applications must be submitted on-line at www.greatplainsryla.org (Student link) no later than February 28, 2014, to be considered for the July, 2014 Camp.
