Heineman: No Medicaid expansionTell North Platte what you think

Gov. Dave Heineman reiterated his opposition to Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion Wednesday in his annual "State of the State" address to the Legislature.

Under the health care reform, Medicaid could be expanded to include more low income people, if states decide to do so.

That would ease the financial burden of mandatory health insurance for lower income residents. Many ranchers have said they would qualify, Sen. Al Davis of Hyannis has said.

Each state must pay part of Medicaid costs for its residents.

With Heineman's prompting, the Legislature voted last year not to expand Medicaid.

Heineman said Wednesday that is still the responsible decision.

"Expanding Medicaid will result in less future funding for state aid to education, special education, early childhood programs, the University of Nebraska, our state college system and our community colleges," he said.

"Additionally, the federal government is already trillions of dollars in debt, and unlikely to fulfill its promised commitment,” he said.
